Dale earned seven varsity letters: four in basketball, two in baseball and one in track. The captain of the basketball team his sophomore, junior and senior years, Dale was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1954 and 1955 and was selected for the All-Prairie College Conference First Team in 1953, 1954 and 1955. He also was named to the All-Sunshine Tournament Team, receiving the highest vote total of any guard in the Portales, New Mexico, tournament. Dale played center field on the Bearcat baseball team, re-established at McKendree in 1954. In his junior and senior years, his batting average was above .325, and he led the team in stolen bases. McKendree finished as champions of the Prairie conference both years. Dale ran the 100 and 200 yard dashes in the last year of McKendree’s track program. His career in higher education began at McKendree where he was baseball coach and a member of the faculty from 1957-63.
