Gary earned four varsity letters in basketball. He received the Louis F. Vesely Memorial Scholarship in 1980-81. Gary was a four-year starter and played 120 McKendree basketball games. He led the team in scoring all four years, and he was the top rebounder his freshman and junior years. Gary was the number two all-time McKendree scorer at the time of his Hall of Fame induction. His 2,362 career points and 8.8 rebounds per game represent and an average of 19.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He was voted Most Valuable Player in 1980 and 1981, and Best Free-Throw Shooter in 1981. He was voted two times to the NAIA All-District 20 Team, including a unanimous decision his senior year. In 1981, Gary was the first McKendrean to be named to the NAIA All-American First Team. He also was named to the Southwest Baptist All-Tournament Team.
