Wayne earned eleven varsity letters: four in basketball, four in track and three in football. He also was on the softball team, a non-lettered sport. In football his teammates voted him Most Valuable Player he was named to the International News Service Little Nineteen Conference Second Team in 1937. He was Most Valuable Player on the basketball squad his junior and senior years, leading scorer both years, team captain his senior year and Associated Press Little Nineteen Honorable Mention for three years. After graduation, as a member of the All-Star Collegiate Football Team, he played against the NFL’s Chicago Cardinals in a charity benefit game. Playing on the Naval Air Station basketball team that won the Southern Amateur Athletic Union (A.A.U.) championship in 1941 and 1942, he was his team’s high scorer, was high scorer for the tournament and was named to the All-Southern A.A.U. First Team.
