A four-year letter winner in football, Mike was a dominant force on defense. He is among the top 10 Bearcats in five different defensive statistic categories. He is the all-time leader in tackles with 277. His 33 tackles-for-loss ranks seventh all-time. His 19.5 quarterback sacks sit fourth on the program's all time list. His four fumble recoveries rank in a tie for fourth all-time, and his five forced fumbles sits in a tie for fourth place. In single-season statistics, Mike led the Bearcats in tackles for three straight seasons from 1997-99. He led the team in quarterback sacks as a freshman in 1996. His seven quarterback sacks in a season ranks in a tie for 10th. He was an NAIA honorable mention All-America selection after the 1998 season. He was also named Mid-States Football Association-Midwest League All-Conference after the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
