Class of 1928
Basketball, Football, Track

Hurley earned eleven varsity letters: three in basketball, four in football, and four in track. McKendree won conference championships in football and basketball while Hurley was a player. In his senior year he was captain of the basketball and track teams. An offensive and defensive end, he was named to the All0-Little Nineteen Conference Football Team in 1925. Spaulding’s 1928 edition of The Intercollegiate Football Guide listed him as one of the leading ends in the nation. An all-conference basketball player, he led McKendree to the Amateur Athletic Union (A.A.U.) tournament in Kansas City. During four years in track, he placed in all college meets and, using the old bamboo pole, set a new school record of 12’7 ½’’ in the pole vault. He ran in the 400-meter relay, establishing a national record in the A.A.U. indoor meet in St. Louis in 1927. After graduation, Hurley spent 25 years coaching at Herrin, Mt. Carmel, Bridgeport and Roxanna.
