Kurt Klein is recognized for four years of hard work and determination that he gave the coaches and programs at McKendree from 1975 to 1979. Many are appreciative of the efforts and the skills involved in his abilities to play basketball and baseball. Kurt was the only student during 1979 to participate in two sports. As he excelled in basketball and baseball, he quickly became top notch in sports at McKendree.

This scholar-athlete from Wesclin High School became one of the outstanding newcomers to the basketball team in 1975. He was placed on the varsity squad all four years of his eligibility at McKendree. Kurt was also a major influence to many of the other players. He improved his teammates’ abilities by forcing them to compete with him. Coach Harry Statham was quoted as saying, “Kurt was not only a great inspiration to the team, but to the whole institution as well.”

Kurt was also a pitcher for the Bearcats’ baseball team. The lefthander notched an 11-3 career record on the mound during his last three years as a starter. The “Big Lefty” had one of the best pick-off movers ever seen.

The Nate Clay Award was given to Kurt in 1979. This award was intended for an athlete who displayed courage on and off the playing field and has given his best in his athletic endeavors.
