Edgar A. “Slick” Schaefer
Athlete
Class of 1950
Track, Football, Basketball

Edgar earned four varsity letters while attending McKendree: two in track, one in football and one in basketball. As co-captain of the track and field team, Slick finished the 1949 track season undefeated in the 120-yard high hurdles. He also ran the 220-yard low hurdles and set a new meet record at the Rose Poly Tech relays in Terre Haute on April 30, clocking in at 25.1 seconds. Six weeks later he broke the 25-second barrier with a time of 24.5 seconds to set a new record at the Ozark A.A.U. Track and Field Championships. Slick also left his mark at the national level. He finished fourth at the 1950 National A.A.U. track and field meet at the University of Maryland. In football, he was instrumental in posting the Bearcats’ first victory since 1941. On October 28, 1948, he carried the pigskin for all three McKendree touchdowns in an 18-7 victory over Chillicothe Business College to put the Bearcats back in the win column. A shoulder injury prevented Slick from competing in football and basketball during his senior year.
