Spike earned ten varsity letters: four in basketball, four in football and two in track. He was also on the tennis team, a non-lettered sport. Spike was basketball captain in 1935-36 and compiled 757 points during his four-year career. He scored 2356 points, third highest in the conference, during his senior year and was on the All-State (All-Conference) First team. Spike was captain of the football team in 1934, most valuable player in 1934 and 1935 and Little Nineteen Conference Most Valuable Player in 1935. He was first-team halfback, Little Nineteen (All-State) in 1934 and 1935 and UPI honorable mention Little All-American in 1934 and 1935. Spike was the first McKendree athlete to make the All-State First Team in both basketball and football. In track Spike competed in the high jump and dashes. After graduation he signed a professional football contract with the Detroit Lions of the National Football League.
