Paul earned seven varsity letters: four in basketball and three in golf. During his four years as a starting forward, Paul was voted Most Valuable Player three times, was named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-District 20 Team on three occasions, and was named to the NAIA All-State Team all four years. On two occasions he was the team’s leading rebounder and was the leading scorer his freshman, sophomore, and junior years. With 2,016 total points he was second in all-time scoring at McKendree when he graduated in 1970. In 1967 he received the Lou Vesely Award for athletic excellence, outstanding character, scholarship and sportsmanship. He was drafted by the Carolina Cougars of the American Basketball Association and the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association and signed with the Cougars. In 1975 he joined the chemistry faculty at McKendree and became assistant coach of the basketball team.
