Dale earned three varsity letters in basketball. He spent his freshman year at Kansas University, transferring to McKendree as a sophomore, and was the team’s leading scorer his junior and senior years. The Bearcat guard/forward was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1976 and 1977. He was captain of the squad his senior year, leading his team to a bid in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District 20 tournament. Dale was selected for the NAIA All-District 20 Team his junior and senior years and was named to a number of invitational all-tournament teams. He was given honorable mention on the NAIA All-America squad in 1977. That same year, he received the Lou Vesely Award for athletic excellence, outstanding character, scholarship and sportsmanship. He was selected in the fifth round of the National Basketball Association draft by the Seattle Supersonics.
